How do I protect myself from ATM skimming? What signs should I watch for to detect these devices?
To protect yourself from ATM skimming, you can follow these tips:
1. Inspect the ATM: Before using an ATM, check for any unusual attachments, color mismatches, or loose parts on the card reader or keypad. Skimmers are often attached on top of the existing card reader or keypad and may look out of place.
2. Cover Your PIN: When entering your PIN at an ATM, shield the keypad with your hand to prevent hidden cameras from capturing your PIN.
3. Use ATMs in Secure Locations: Whenever possible, use ATMs located in well-lit, heavily trafficked areas like inside a bank branch.
4. Regularly Monitor Your Account: Keep a close eye on your account statements and sign up for transaction alerts to quickly detect any unauthorized activity.
5. Use Contactless Payment Methods: Consider using contactless payment methods like mobile wallets instead of physical cards to avoid exposing your card information at ATMs.
If you suspect an ATM has been compromised by a skimming device, report it to the financial institution or the ATM owner immediately.
